Excel COUNT – A function review

Here are the pros why you should use the COUNT formula in Excel

  • It is easy to write and learn
  • It is easy to read and maintain
  • Saves you the time of counting visually. Believe me, I did this before know the formula
  • You can count cells, ranges, hard coded numbers, a combination of those
  • Counts tons of numbers in a flash
  • It automatically detects the above side contiguous cells and include them in the formula (not applicable when you write the formula by hand)
  • It automatically detects the left side contiguous cells and include them in the formula (not applicable when you write the formula by hand)

Here are the cons why you should not use the COUNT function in Excel

  • does not count texts
  • does not count blanks
  • does not count numbers stored as texts
  • does not count errors
  • does not count logical values

This function is sometimes understimated, but it is a basic asset in any excel user toolbox. You can apply to count how entries and use that quantity in another formula. I usually use the count function to count tons of number entries that are outside excel.
